PG 64-22 is TxDOT’s most common base binder. On the hottest afternoons, a sun-baked driveway can run past that 147°F line. That is when soft spots, tire marks and dents appear.

Heat damage is not one problem. It is five related ones, and each shows up a little differently on your driveway.
1. Softening and Scuffing
Hot binder turns tacky. When you turn your steering wheel while parked, the tires twist and tear the soft surface. That leaves curved scuff marks, most often on newer asphalt and near the garage.
2. Rutting and Dents
Weight sitting in one place on soft asphalt presses it down. Trucks, RVs and trailers parked in the same spot through summer afternoons leave ruts. Kickstands, trailer jacks and ladder feet punch small dents.
3. Oxidation and UV Aging
Sun and heat slowly burn off the oils in the binder. The asphalt turns gray and stiff.
