The Hill Country itself is big. The Texas State Historical Association counts all or part of 25 Hill Country counties, with elevation rising from under 1,000 feet in the southeast to over 2,500 feet in Kerr County.
How Does the Ground Change Across Our Service Area?
The ground under your pavement changes a lot between Harper and Seguin. That matters more than distance, because the base is what holds a driveway or road together. Here is what we plan for in each part of the map.
West: Thin Soil Over Limestone
Towns like Kerrville, Hunt, Harper and Fredericksburg sit on the Edwards Plateau. Common soils here, like the Brackett series, reach limestone bedrock within 5 to 20 inches according to USDA soil survey records. That gives a strong foundation, but it can mean rock work during grading and careful planning for drainage on slopes.
East: Clay That Swells and Shrinks
Toward Seguin, San Marcos and the I-35 corridor, you get closer to Blackland Prairie clay. The Texas Water Development Board notes these soils shrink and swell markedly as moisture changes. On clay, we dig out soft spots and build a thicker, well compacted base so the pavement does not move with the ground.
Rain Changes From West to East
Rainfall also climbs as you move east. On the Edwards Plateau, average yearly rain ranges from about 15 inches in the far west to more than 33 inches in the east, based on Texas Parks and Wildlife data. More rain means drainage and crown matter more on eastern jobs.
